I am carrying on an annual tradition of purchasing two uncirculated coin sets from the US Mint - something my parents started back in the 60's. I am not a coin collector but want an elegant way to store them. The goal is to preserve them for a collector down the road.

They currently arrive from the Mint in a cardboard box (pictured). To you experts, is it better to keep them in this box? However, that makes it difficult to organize unless you write the year on the box. It also rules out ever being able to look at them. Or do you suggest removing them from the cardboard and putting them in a nice box (still keeping them in their folders/envelopes)? Is there a US Mint box to recommend, perhaps something from Air-Tites? I do want a nice solution if they are going to be removed from the cardboard.

Thanks!

I've been collecting these for about 20 years myself and don't have a solid answer for you. My GOAL was to break one set for each year and put the coins into albums (Dansco or Whitman Classic). However, I haven't been able to talk myself into doing that yet.

Some of the older sets are in my safe, some of the newer ones are in shoe boxes. So, don't have a good answer for you. I bet GR58 does though.

I say to do what ever will make you happy. I personally buy the set and open it to look at them. Once my curiosity and eagerness has been satisfied I will put the set back in the cardboard box and store it with the rest of my mint sets. The boxes do have the year and set type marked above the bar code so you wont have to write it there.

It takes a lot more space to store them in the original cardboard boxes than in one of those sturdy mint set boxes. And if you do this for long enough, you will see that space does become an issue.

This is true. I think I'll only be able to fit 5 or six sets in one 'Mint' box. And I have 2 uncirculated and 2 proof for every year since the sixties. I'd have tons of $$$$ in boxes alone and need a whole room. Large cardboard box it is. Thanks again.

I only purchase one each year but I do take them out of the cardboard and throw it away.
I store the sets in boxes like the ones in the wizard link. I like to look at my coins
