how long did pennies still circulate after cents were introduced in 1858?

were they withdrawn very soon, or were they accepted for some time with some sort of allowance for exchange?

I assume the transition period took a while. They didn't make postage stamps denominated in cents until 1859.

Don't forget, in Canada in the 1850s, American coins were far more likely to be found in change than either Canadian or British coins.

Don't know about the old Canadian Penny, but the Canadian Cent was discontinued in 2012, and is still circulating down here in the border states !
