Coin Is in really bad condition, so I dont think the die cracks command a premium becuase it is a cull. Maybe check for a RPD

Aye it's had its better days that's for sure. But I love die cracks and this is by far my oldest example =) I know it's not worth alot but would you say more or less then 15$? Thats what I bought it for. To me it's worth it and I guess that's all that matters but would still love to know if I was anywhere near the actual worth.

Die cracks won't normally add any value to a Shield nickel. The mint had so many problems with the alloy and die life that it is much harder to find an example that DOESN'T have a die crack than to find one that does. Quote: Looks like they had an issue with die cracks that year: They had issues with die cracks EVERY year. Average die life on these coins was only 15K to 25K coins. At the lower range in the early years up to the higher end of the range by the end of the series.

Well if anyone has a high grade shield nickle with a strong die crack (s) for sale I would love to buy it. My wife makes jewelry with coins and bullion silver. I want her to throw one in a small bezel for a good luck necklace =)

Red Man , you still have a Shield nickel that has value not only to you but other collectors. @ Dustin6,said Quote: Coin Is in really bad condition, so I dont think the die cracks command a premium becuase it is a cull. Maybe check for a RPD Quote: cull A coin that is basically non-collectible due to its extremely bad condition. A coin that will not even qualify for a grade of Poor-1, usually because of extensive environmental damage or other post-striking damage. This is not a cull. Quote: Maybe check for a RPD[

Die cracks are pretty common on 1860's nickels.

They are almost the norm rather than the exception.

IMHO, the 1867 isn't a cull. It's got good details with ED. While $15 seems to be on the high side to me as such, I've no doubt that many collectors would pay around that price, due to the interesting die crack. RedMan ... You might keep your eyes open for an 1883 NC nickel (many of these exist) and other early ones with die cracks. That would make an interesting collection, regardless of condition. You could call it "The Cracker Collection!"
