122116631006The listing has high resolution photos. What do you think caused the lines on this Trade dollar? The lines are in the fields to the left and right of Liberty, and also on her body. But not her arm. They all seem to be parallel, and not very deep. Comments? The lines continue through Liberty's body. That tells me this coin has been cleaned and those are cleaning/wiping lines. The arm lines have probably been worn away by use.

If I'm seeing correctly the lines go right up to lady Liberty. To me that says die polishing. Abrasive cleaning would leave a "halo" around her where the lines didn't meet her.
BUT
On the other hand there appears to be no toning in the protected areas. That says "dipped" to me. Cleaned coin.

those are called roller lines, they were in the planchet from when the stock was being rolled to the proper length by the rolling machine. sometimes they are obliterated by the strike and sometimes they are not. they have been there since day one of the coins life and even before that.
Feel free to call me Will.

I am not sure what caused the lines on the OP coin. Here is another Trade 1875 S with lines in the field and on the devices in a PCGS holder. Look at her legs on the obverse and on the eagle wing on the reverse and the faint lines in the field. The lines appear to have been caused at the mint. See Link 231585723114

Slider, those look like they might be imperfections on the holder.

Dollarman's got it, those are planchet striations created during the rolling out of the strip or when the strip is pulled through the drawbench. You will probably find the same line on the reverse running in the same direction.

I see them on blank planchets.

So with Dollarman's response, Who here thinks the grading Company's would grade the coin without a detail holder even though it was caused through the minting process? How many think they would catch it and how many people think they themselves ( Grading Comapny) would call it cleaned.

I like this Trade dollar I bought about a year ago. It has a nice look to it.
