I recently won a 1905 French Indochina Piastre on ebay: When I received the coin I was dismayed to see several hairlines from a cleaning. My quandary is this: I only paid $22 for it. That is roughly $6 more than melt. Should I keep the coin or return it for a refund? What would you do?

well you have to ask yourself if its worth sending back and losing the shipping both ways for the principal of the coin being misrepresented (at least I am guessing it wasn't described as cleaned or lightly cleaned). Allot of ebay sellers count on buyers not sending the coin back just for that very reason.

I'd keep it. Seems like Krause value on it is more than that even if it is cleaned. Besides, nice looking coin if you don't overexamine it. I've got an XF 1906 I've had for years (got mine for $6, when silver was about $4). If silver goes to $50 its gone, otherwise, a pretty coin that I'll hold on to.

Bryan - The seller was Aspencoins. I've never had issues with them in the past and they have good ratings. They also usually note in the listing if a coin was cleaned. Judging on past performance I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that this was an oversight.

snowman, why not e-mail and explain your concerns to the seller, and see what response you get back! then you will know who your dealing with, how reputable they really are,and decide what action to take next. Nice coin by the way!!

I hope my response wasn't taken as I was saying this particular seller was playing the "sell a cleaned coin as original" game, I was just stating some sellers do and they play it knowing most buyers will not worry about sending a $20.00 coin back when they are out sometimes upwards of $5.00 for shipping to them and then they have to pay to ship it back to them

Thanks for your replies. The seller has a no-questions-asked return policy, so I could return it for a refund. The only cost would be the money it took to ship it back (I actually won multiple auctions and got combined shipping).
I think I'm going to go along with what many of you said and keep the coin. The price was right and I figure that some time bouncing around in my pocket will likely give it a more original look without much added wear.

regarding the face as pictured, I have my doubts about this one. To me it is a forgery, presumably Chinese, intended for tourists, district of Szechuan, early nineties of the last century. In Holland where I live, prices for real ones do not come above the 14 US dollars...

Interesting. What features lead you to beleive it is fake?

I would contact the seller and explain your concerns. They might discount it a couple of bucks. Jim
