Hot coin. As suggested, maybe in a fire.

We had a house fire once.

These were some of my older son's collection. Mine was in a different part of the house and were fine.

Only the checkbook!
Everyone made it out okay. I was at work and the only people at home were my wife and baby daughter. My wife heard noises coming from the second floor and when she went to see what it was, all she could see was smoke. The FD beat it down pretty quickly and saved most of the house. The second floor was burnt pretty bad and the lower level was water damaged like you wouldn't believe.
No one being hurt was all we cared about, other things can be replaced.

Yes Cwb, you were very lucky that day. Did any of your coins bubble up like mine? When I first saw it, I figured it was probably a slug headed for his head. I flipped it, and that was out. I am sure everyone is right about the fire/heat affecting my coin. It artificially toned it too. Thanks all.

I don't remember seeing any that way, but some of them were pretty badly burned. Some of them were thrown out of a window and lost in the yard.
That fire was about 11 years ago.

Get your metal detector out. There are tons of coins about 5" down. Many that were dropped were dropped before they were known to be rare.

It's hard to remember now, but I think the boys searched pretty well for them.

Cwb - pretty crazy story. If there's ever a numismatic museum of some sorts with a section that has odd coin items, this would go perfectly.
