Looks like this seller's artificially toned (in my opinion) coins are selling like hotcakes on ebay. This seller currently has over 6600 listings of similarly toned coins.

Is there going to be any un-messed with original coins left for future generations if these practices continue? Does the coin community as a whole need to educate newbie collectors better on artificial toning and how to spot it?

Your thoughts/

I think the clue that the coins are artificially toned is that the seller has 6600 of them for sale.

I just looked at one page and I think they look awful. It's a real shame, in my opinion.

I sincerely doubt that more than a few percent of folks who buy coins ever do much research or buy books, other than those listing "values".

Attend any local coin auction and you will likely have a hard time picking your chin off the floor. People who "COLLECT coins" are not necessarily educated about their purchases. I've even consigned to such auctions to clean out my garbage.

Some sellers have decided there's nothing wrong with selling whatever they can sell, regardless of the actual value of their wares.

He's mostly doing it to modern coins so I'm not that concerned. At one point people liked clean coins, then we as a hobby decided we want them untouched. If some people like artificial toning and will pay a premium for it, so be it. A coin (or anything) is worth whatever someone will pay for it.

Exactly! And I am not one of those people.

If people want to waste their money, they're free to do so.

Isn't this somehow the essence of a free market economy? As long as they have a market for their stuff, they can sell the devil and his old mother for what I know...
