A friend asked me what his 1882-S Morgan might be worth. I don't know enough about grading Morgans, so I said I would ask my expert consultants.

My uneducated guesstimate is VF-30.

These are pictures he took with his phone. I hope they're good enough.

If I had to smack a number, I'd say VF25-30 details cleaned. Sorry. I wonder if there is any hope for this one other than melt. Maybe a VAM guy can help ID this one.

Thank you all very much. He'll be bummed, but better to have the straight scoop.

What are the signs of cleaning? I'm getting better at identifying cleaned Lincoln wheat cents, but I'm clueless about Morgans.

VF-30 cleaned - obverse fields (in particular) appear abraded between devices.

Gotchya. Thanks - that helps. I don't plan on collecting Morgans, but the more I know about different coins the better I reckon. At least I can give friends more well-informed opinions on their 'treasures'. ;-)

Value will be pretty close to melt. 1882-S is a common Morgan, rather easy to find as UNC and typically have pretty sharp strikes. If someone wanted a well struck UNC Morgan for $40-60, this would be a solid option at even small coin shows; it's as far from rare as a Morgan can be (and as a type Morgans are FAR from rare). Your coin being circulated and cleaned like this has so much competition available that is not cleaned for not much more money, that it basically reverts is value to melt IMO.
