Hi,I was wondering if this 1977 penny is a error coin or PMD? It looks like its missing a layer and texture of the coin is not like a regular penny...Any info would be great thanks!

It may have been plated at one time. (It is a copper planchet coin.) The surface looks like an acid was used on it. But not as strong as other acids that removed the copper from the coin. Looks altered from what I can see so far.

Acid dipping can make the weight lower, thin the coin in all directions, but still leave the design. I was mentioning used acid on the coin by perhaps brushing on the surface. The reason I mention this is that rims and thickness look unaffected.
