The British took Sumatra and Ceylon from the Dutch, then gave up Sumatra in return for keeping Ceylon. Good business on their part.
The East India Company issued these coins to gain some semblance of control over commerce, the Dutch had done nothing in that regard and coinage was needed by the locals.
