I found this coin today in the register. It is a very strange coin and I'm hoping someone here can help me identify it. First of all the metal is all wrong. I'm pretty sure it isn't silver since it is so light and has a wierd sheen to it. Second it has some sort of clear lacquer over it which is why the ridge looks like it is flared outward (which it isn't. It is just the light bending from the angle of picture). Third as you can tell the state side of the coin is gilded gold in color. I'm wondering if it is counterfeit. I've just never heard of it being done to coins...

No, I wish. I don't even have access to one...It just feels off. If I had a scale, I would definitely check to confirm my suspicion.

You can make a home made balance scale with a popsicle stick and a regular quarter. Check it that way, it's not the most accurate, but it should tell you if it's heavier or lighter than it should be.

to CCF. It is an enhanced coin done outside of the U.S. mint. It is most likely plated with silver or platinum and gold.

I would hold on to it- not because it has any numismatic value, but as a novelty. It is a neat circulation find.

When a coin is plated/reprocessed, it ruins all collector interest in them. Thus someone spent a coin from his collection that he paid too much money for on HSN and now realizes face value is all they are worth.

So this coin was plated by a collector? If it is actual platinum and gold wouldn't it be worth more than 25 cents?

Platinum is unlikely, the gold is probably worth less than what it's on.

No,by a company.

No,the amount of gold-silver or platinum is so minuscule it wouldn't add much if any to the metal value. It seems to be in nice condition so you would be able to sell it for more then 25 cents.

I think I read somewhere a few months ago that it requires about $0.12 worth of gold to completely plate a quarter, but since it's so difficult to remove it still doesn't add any value.
