I got this today and I guess the dealer was swamped with other coins waiting to be graded, looked at it real quick and offered a price.

Just wondering what it would grade?

I'm going to say VF-35 for an overall grade.

I'll go against the grain and say it's a nice Fine. The reverse looks like it's pretty well worn. Perhaps in hand it's a different story.

Interesting. I went high because of what Prethen noticed about the reverse. I saw the apparent reverse wear as a counterpoint to the rather sharp and deep obverse strike and allowed my estimation of the obverse to carry my grade. It's great to see how different graders interpret the same coin. Either way $40 is a fair price.

Here is a better picture. Yeah, the obverse looks a bit better than the reverse.

I suppose strike (for the reverse) could be an issue, but there seems like a lot of wear on that reverse. Look at the rims and how everything has that flat gray look. Plus, the diamond looks pretty flat. My gut tells me F12, but like I said, in hand I might be willing to go a bit higher depending on how it looks.

P.S. That would suck if that trime fell between the keys and got lost inside the keyboard!

My first thought was F-15. I need to see a little more shield outline to go VF.

Its a very nice trime though regardless of grade!

Based on the above observations, I'm guessing that this would go into a F15 holder.

After scouring pics of certified and looking at my own and those at the dealer, I'm sticking with VF, although I might have been 10 points high.

I'm with amac and habib on this one, considering the coin, the strike, and the age.

Cool, thanks for all the help.

Nah, it won't fall in. Keyboard is not deep enough. If it does, well, one key will be definately pulled out :P

My first good trime and my second. My other one, a 1853, has a hole. Got it for a few dollars almost 10 years ago, when I was just 12. Seems like several years ago, time does go by really fast... :(
