Does anybody actually collect bitcoins? Are there varieties, etc.?

There's quite the empire-building going on with patenting around the bitcoin phenomenon. Dunno if this relates to the physical embodiment of the coin/token/whatever.

There are only tokens or rounds selling on the catchy name.

@ace_ftw and @jbuck, I'm not sure that I agree 100% with you. I think that in theory some bitcoins contain both the electronic currency as well as physical metal for intrinsic value:

@garolyn, I might suggest hanging around more in the bullion section as they discuss bitcoins occasionally:

There are tokens/medals that have QR codes, but the bitcoin is the electronic code and the physical token is just a token.

There are tokens/medals that have the bitcoin SYMBOL on them. They may be made of a precious metal and so have an intrinsic value, but that's not tied to the value of a bitcoin.

If you put the two together - precious metal and electronic code, there's still no tie - the value is the sum of the values (zero if the electronic value has been transferred).

The whole point of the bitcoin is to not have a physical commodity tied to it. These tokens are taking advantage of most people not understanding that.

These "tokens" are taking advantage of the curious overlap that exists between the "only-gold-is-money doomsday-prepper" culture and the "don't-trust-the-government only-internet-money-is-truly-free" culture. People who live in that overlap seem to be unaware that, if doomsday happens, the Internet is going down, and their internet money will evaporate. On that (hypothetical) day, the people who paid ten times the bullion value for a "bitcoin coin" will be wishing they'd bought ten ordinary bullion rounds with their money instead.

The blockchain is totally dependent on three things...

People willing to mine (to record transactions)
Electricity to run the miners
Communications to share the results

Yeesh, no thanks. First off, 1 bitcoin is currently over $600, so the "1 bitcoin" rounds that cost any less than that are pure baloney.

As for the ones that come preloaded with a bitcoin... how exactly are you supposed to use it?

If I wanted pretend money, I'd just stick to the Lundy Puffin, which actually has numismatic value.
