Picked these up at the LCS for $17 each. I like old crowns.

I agree--not too bad. Still it is a bit of downer on the defacing of the 5 Francs.

I'd describe them as dollar-size rather than crown, simply due to their weight and silver purity.

Or you could just use the Latin Monetary Union 5.

From the site glossary: Quote: Crown A large silver coin of Great Britain and the British colonies, valued at 5 shillings. The name is also used in a more general sense, of any large silver coin roughly the same size as a crown.

Regardless, I like the genre. Picked up a nice 1867 Boliviano and an 1873 Belgium 5 Francs recently. I've been watching pre-1800 Taler/Thaler prices lately, too, and I'm about ready to ease into that market.

What's the weight on the 1838 5F? Sometimes scratches like that are used to mark counterfeits. If it is a contemporary counterfeit it's probably worth more than $17.

24.6 grams. A 1875 5 franc that I weighed was 24.95 grams. I figured someone wasn't a huge fan of Louis Philippe.

Cool! That 5 Pesetas is nice and it is pretty sweet at my LCS they get in a few "crowns" that I can get for spot or $20-30 if they are more rare.

@arkie sounds real. I've got a counterfeit 2F Louis Phillippe with the plating removed. It's about 20% light and obviously bronze or copper. You find the most interesting stuff in the junk foreign coin buckets.
