Why Are 1981-1993 $1 FRN Stars So Expensive?

I've been working on my $1 FRN collection for a year or so now, and I'm coming down to the last few notes to complete it.

I'll back up a bit, my collection consists of one CU regular and one CU star note from each series. For 1988A and beyond, I also have one CU regular/star from each BEP facility (so, up to 4 notes per series). Eventually I'll work on the web-fed notes and other experimental notes as well, but for now I'm happy with the basics and stars.

The ones I'm missing are stars from 1981 to 1993. These are markedly more expensive than their counterparts from surrounding years/series when I'm cruising for them on ebay, but they don't necessarily seem to be any more scarce than earlier and later notes. With the exception of the 1969C star note I need, which does seem to have a much smaller total print run.

So, does anyone know why UNC star notes in the 1981-1993 range would be $10-$20 when the series around them are $5-ish? There just don't seem to be many available for sale in the first place, so maybe it's just a mater of supply and demand.

"You cannot stop the ongoing love affair between pasta sauce and a white dress shirt."

It's like some form of Murphy's Law. If you need/want something, it's rare or expensive, and if you already have something, than it's plentiful and cheap.

haha - very true. But what does that have to do with my question? Does that mean I'm going to end up buying regardless of cost?

I hear ya. But it feels like I've been patient and have been waiting long enough for cheaper alternatives to surface. I guess not.

So you're buying these raw whenever and wherever, is that right? At your LCS, on ebay, etc.?

Yes, at the least expensive price point I can find. I am not in a hurry to complete the set and want to make sure I buy efficiently.

Look for package deals. Occasionally a seller will offer a complete series set with up to twelve star notes at a discount. I see this mostly on the Heritage Weekly Auction. Having patience and being picky is a must.

And, if by chance you run into a 1999 $1 St Louis (H*) run #2 spanning serial numbers H03200001* - H03840000* , please let me know.
