Are filled mint marks fairly common?I have a 78 D Quarter filled a 82 D quarter filled and several others.Also a 1919 lincoln with the L missing on the obverse.I don't any way of taking pictures right now.I am new to this and will have to check other topics on that.Thanks Mike

to CCF. Filled mm are kinda common. The missing L is probably a Grease Filled Die also kinda common.

Yes they are common, but I like them because they are a lot of the time one of the first things people find that gets them into this crazy hobby.

If you are talking about the center of the mint mark being filled, that is from the post that forms the cent is breaking off the die. When it is totally gone it can even be taller than the mint mark. That is because the area the held the post in place has broken off lower than the post area. Same with the digits and letters that have a center. The post can break away from them as well:

When a Grease Fill on a die happens that device can be partially affected, or totally affected, depending on how much grease had fill that device. (the grease prevent the strike from happening on the coin)
