Looks like a normal half dollar from the images provided. The accented hair is on the proof coin. This is a business strike coin. Notice the finish on these proof halves: These are proof coins, yours is not.

Thank you for the reply, Coop, but I already have that information. I'm trying to find out whether this is a special strike... information I gathered from the PCGS site gives detail comparisons (satin finish but Proof strike, normal hair instead of accented, sharp square edges, etc) which this coin seemingly has, but I'm not 100% sure if it actually meets the criteria. I need fresh eyes, basically, to look at the pics and see if what I'm seeing is correct, or if I'm missing key details. Thanks again!

The normal business strike is all I'm seeing on your coin. It maybe a doubled die, but I can't confirm/deny it at this point. If you could get some larger image if the motto, that would be a great place to start.

Is this a US Mint set or a set put together by a third party after leaving the mint? Thanks, Doug.

Oh boy another one of these, Look coop is an expert, I believe what he says unless he is corrected by mike. Just dont be like the person before and hurt other forum members, send them off to PCGS, and then he never came back to the forum with the results, probably because they are what everyone else said

OK, now I think I know what you are talking about. The 1964 SMS coins. They look almost proof like. These were limited in number they have a very fresh die that struck them. It is very doubtful to find these in circulation. They tend to not look shiny, but have a very nice look to them. But your coin is just a normal business strike coin.

I'm having a hard time understanding , If this half came out of a mint set or a 1964 SMS, what's with all the pock marks all over his face ? As asked above ,was this a self put together mint set ?

Thank you coop for posting the markers for the Heritage 64 SMS half dollar. This should be a great tool to determine whether or not someone has found one. I don't have the time but I think someone should check other known 64 SMS coins to see if using markers would show if other dies were used.

Larry: You can get larger/clear images on the PCGS website on the coinfacts area of all the 1964 SMS coins. (Some images can be as large as 6K pixels) I search different sites to get large images to find markers. But with the populations less than 100 (some less than 50) it is doubtful to find them in the wild.
