It might be bubbles under the plating. You might see if they give under the pressure of a toothpick? No premium for this though.

If that is the actual color of your penny, it's brass plated in error at the mint. It would be worth around $50.

What book would be best to figure out coins from the 17 & 1800's? Key dates & images?
How does one begin to sort these types of coins?
