When I was leaving the coin shop this week, the owner showed me this coin and asked me to look into the VAM for it. I took some hurried pictures and Thought I would get some grade and VAM opinions here too. The scope pictures are fine, but I was not set up for regular pics so ...they are what they are, not bad...but not great.

I got to VAM 5 and I figured this was a VAM 5, there is no break at the cap so I know it is not VAM 5b. I have to look at it in hand to find the clashed "n" for a VAM 5a. It does have the wing die scratch that is on all three no. 5 VAM's, and the dash under the eight. Any other opinions appreciated.

Looks very close to mine. I had to go back three pages to find it. Wow thesae move through here fast.... Maybe it's the holder and lighting that is not bringing out the clashing as much....

I can see a wing clash under the neck. Check close to the neck line for the clashed n. VAM 5 or 5A.

Not much on VAMs, but I would say MS-63 for a grade, although the pictures could be clearer. Looks like some bag marks on the cheek and other places in the fields typical for a GSA dollar.

I'll say net AU58...theres something undesirable and unattractive going on along the the cheek and the bottom of the neck that looks like circulation/handling or corrosion damage to me.

Easy 63, maybe better. J_h_s, the kicker for me is the minor breaks in the frost in the hair over the ear - it's kinda flat, a weak strike for Carson City, but there's still frost there. That would be the first thing to go away if the coin had ever been handled in circulation. The same can be said for the eagle's breast feathers.

The scratches on the cheek are something seen fairly commonly in Morgans - I'm guessing that they are the result of being rubbed against the side of the Mint bag with the weight of other coins on them, but it's only a guess.

Either way, the usual photography disclaimer applies - there's no way to tell for sure, in the GSA slab, unless the coin is in-hand.

I think it is the hurried pics, tough lighting (overhead spots) and the GSA holder. It is a good looking coin in -hand, When I go back Tuesday I will see if I can get some better pictures. Getting the camera to focus on the coin and not the holder can bet rough. I just wanted to make sure my opinion on the VAM for this coin is correct. If I had it in hand , this sure would be easier :)

SuperDave is right on the money , I have a zoom of the face I was going to put up for grading help, but I deemed it too close- but it shows the weakness at the ear and frost breaks nicely. Come back for another look....
