just looking through my dimes I found these nice spiked head Mercury.

This is from a very heavy die polishing. Note the bridge of the nose is affected as well as in front of the face. Something major must have happened to the die. So they rescued it.

Remember if it is raised on the coin, it is incuse on the die. Thus a polished down area on the die will leave a raised area on the coin.
A die crack is incuse on the die, raised on the coin.
A clash will dent the other die on an out line of the bust/building and devices. Leaving it slightly raised on the coin.
A die cud/chip/break is missing part of the die, leaving a raised area equal to what is missing on the coin.
