I've never seen a Morgan half. Is this a pattern coin?

Here's the link.

It rather looks like one of the 1877 patterns. The fact that it also looks circulated worries me. I don't know specifically of any modern "replicas" put out with the intent to deceive, but obviously this is the sort of thing that ought to be only bought certified. A very risky purchase at almost $1K, I'd say.

Must be Judd expert among us who can quickly answer this. Winning (?) price shows at $485. Seller has huge positive feedback.

Considering that he is selling old glad bars and "coins", it casts some doubt on his other products.

Perhaps you're right, I didn't get into it.

This just looks like a very unlikely thing to fake.

Oops, you're right, for some reason I had $985 in my head.

There are phonies of this particular pattern documented, but they seem pretty obvious, struck/cast in brass/bronze. But overall, seeing some of the obscure world coinage issues that are being reproduced in modern day China, I've adopted the wary attitude that almost anything numismatic is being presently copied somewhere in that country if there's any chance an underhanded buck that can be made on it. Unfortunately, there seems to be no lack of unscrupulous resellers of such junk, either.

If it's an unmarked replica, shouldn't that be reported in the counterfeit section?

So, what was the purpose of this type of coin? Was it just minted as a test rather than for circulation? If so, why would it have circulated? Would merchants have accepted it?

There was a fairly large series of pattern half dollars produced in 1877 designed by both Morgan and Barber.
