I'm writing because I'm having a hard time reckoning with this coins appearance. On the reverse States Of America lettering is flattened or ground to the point of no relief of the lettering and the dots separating these words are literally non existent and poorly visible. Likewise, on the obverse the 21 in the date is flattened or ground down also, to where there is no relief and therefore poorly visible. I've never seen anything like this with a MS graded coin before. I'm curious if anyone has any knowledge or are aware of this and also what your opinion of this is as far as rarity and value?

In 1921 the Mint had trouble striking Peace silver dollars.
The relief on the coin was designed to be too high for proper striking.
Hence many were softly struck.
You have one.

The problem was corrected (as much as possible) in 1922.
Rest in Peace

Well struck '21s are few and far between and usually sell for a premium above FMV for the grade.

and to CCF!

Very few 21 Peace dollars are exceptionally struck. I'm kinda of an expert on this date due to a lot of research when I got my own. High relief on this coin greatly affected the strike in the center of the coin....,libertys hair by her ear is almost always flat and weak, Eagles breast feathers are normally weak and undefined. Your eagles breast feathers look decently struck, but the hair on the obverse is weak, which is typical. Dave is correct fully struck 21 Peace dollars sell for crazy premiums cause they are extremely scarce. You have a nice coin and a 64 grade is nothing to insult, it's a good $500 or so piece. This is why the mint stopped doing high relief on the Peace dollars cause of these issues....21 was the only year with the high relief the exception 1922 of which there are like a dozen trial strikes which are big $$$$. If you have any other questions about this coin please feel free to PM me.

Many thanks to the many helpful replies to my post. I don't see a way to thank you all individually but I'm on a learning curve today.
