As an avid collector of 1859 9/9s, I will chime in here and give you an idea of relative "scarcity". Here are the number of coins I have of each: DP9-3: 25 DP9-5: 20 9/6-1: 10 And now for the "rare" ones (others have already posted the pics): J5a: 6 E39b: 6 I4 (9/6-2): 2 E38b: 1 J21: 0 E22b (9/9/9-2): 0 E7a: 0So if I estimate the frequency of DP9-3 and DP9-5 at around 1:200 for DP9-3, 1:300 for DP9-5, then the ones that I have 0, 1 or 2 of, should run around 1:2000 or so (these are rough estimates of course)

I don't think the PC59-52 (5+E7a) is as rare as the others. The problem with that one is getting a good enough grade and early enough die state to see the multiple punches on the 9. It doesn't take much wear to make that die look pretty normal.
DEVLEC, don't you have one you posted before that shows 4 punches on the 9?

DEVLEC, don't you have one I do,..I do...and then some more... Got to love that "Quad 9"... ..and another example for the fun of the viewing....and you are correct Phil.....With the start of contact ..the layers quickly fade away.. ..and another triple 9..always nice..but not as nice as the previous page.. . .

I'm late to this game of 59 varieties... .. but we also know that Ed and Jim and Doug and a few others have been at this for decades and should have a great handle as to which of the 59 9/9's are the toughest out there.. Maybe they will add some welcome insight here...? Here are a couple of other examples of the P4a.. I have more,..but not enough to fill that Sabre-Tooth cat's mouth.

You forgot about me and Brad Gravestone, who have been working on '59's for the last 30 years .. only Hax has been working longer. Brad and I lite the spark in most current variety collectors 20 years ago on the old CCRS site. I'm not a die tracker .. I'm a variety hoarder.

I never forget you Okie..!...I just didn't want to drag you into the Haxby #'s game here as you don't do that.
I've never met or had contact with Brad, so I didn't want to name names that were out of my little circle of 59ers.
CV did put a few good reference #'s in here that do help us sort through some tough ones.

Here are two more examples of DP9 variations that are less collectable that I thought I would share! Now I will leave it to the 59ers to post their photos! Enough of my photos now... MG

That last 9/9 that Viper posted is one that I'm not familiar with.

I feel that these 9/9's are tough to find in the upper grades....and some I don't have at all.. Many listed here are the well known blockbusters,..but there are a lot of seldom seen ones in this list.. E7a..if found with a quad 9.. E22a, E24, E25a, F2a, F3, E32b, E32c, E37a, E38b, I4, I7, J5, J5a, J7, J21, J23, P4, P4a, P12a, P15b... I feel that I was very lucky with some of my recent finds.. This J3a seems to be very illusive in any shape or form.. ..and seeing as it's quite a dramatic 9/9,.. I'm very surprised that it's not in the back of the 2011 Charlton... .. .

I remember when Ed first dove into large cents in New England, back on the old CCRS website. He took to the Canadian large cent varieties like a duck to water... back then, New England coin stores were ripe for the picking for Vicky varieties, and Ed found some real scarce coins relatively quickly...

That is a very nice 45a+J3a DEVLEC! It's an unusual repunching on the 9. Can you post the obverse photo? I like the die crack progression on the 45a obverse.
