We often see examples of the DP # 1 to 5 for sale on ebay and at shows. Even the TP or the Inv 9/6 are seen here and at shows on a somewhat regular basis. Expensive when offered in the fair to higher grades but they are often seen. At the back of the 2011 Charlton there are 11 examples of the RP in the 9 that are listed at over 1000 dollars . Some of these never show up at shows that I've been to. ..like p. 282 or 286 as 2 quick examples..... So my question is ... Which of these 2011 Charlton 9/9's are truely rarely seen or are the true toughest ones to get.. I'd love to see examples of the toughest ones from our very knowledgeable group of 59ers here. Not the DP #1 to 5 or TP or 9/6..but some of the other rarely seen ones. Thanks for any pics that you can share or discuss here.

Devlec .. Wait til the next coin show and I'll show them to you. When we 'priced" out the varieties for the 2011, all 4 of us collectors gave each of the varieties a "multiple" and we were all pretty close. Where we weren't (after discussion) we eliminated the high and low and took the average of the other two. That multiple was a number as to the scarcity and how much more than a "regular" 1859 that the variety would be. We used coins in the VF-20-30 range to arrive at our multiple and used a regular 1858 as the standard to compare it to. When we did the 2011, the DP'd 3-5 and TP's were not recognized by Trends or the front of Charlton. ALL of the varieties, not just the 59's, have shown to be pretty close to the mark as to what you see them for at dealers, shows, or ebay ... once you lop off the difference from the 70% of Trends that you can normally buy a coin for, rather than believing the Charlton or Trends pricing. Charlton to our "multiple" and used it across the board for each of the listed grades. That's why you see 1000+ coins in the MS-60 slot. It was Charlton applying this multiple across the board that gives you those prices. You need to handle thousands of 59's to find examples of some of them. We could have named some of those coins after the named 59's, but we just went with the 3 & 4 to make 1-4 as Hi/Lo, Lo/Hi, R/L & L/R to show the myriad of overpunches that existed. We added the 9/6 & #5 because they were just too different to be a regular overpunch. There ARE some rarities ... I'd say that there are about 12-15 59's that are worthy to actively seek for weird varieties. The others, to me, are neat to have but not a whole lot of excess value. Now the die-trackers that follow the Haxby site may have a different opinion, but I'm just a collector, not a tracker.

I'm not sure we can know yet which of the repunched 9 varieties are the rarest. Everyone who collects them probably has a different opinion about that. It's like Doug (Colonialtokens) wrote about the Haxby varieties when asked which ones he considered rare. He said "The ones I don't have yet." So in my case I would have to say the 20a2 (page 293) would be the toughest of those in Charlton 2011, because it's the only one of the those DP 9's I don't have. But I may see 2 of them on ebay tomorrow. The 2011 Charlton variety section and Dr. Haxby's site have gotten a lot more collectors interested in the 1859 varieties, but I think it will take a few more years of collecting, study and sharing before we will get a real good idea of rarity. Threads like this will help us to share our opinions and get us a little closer to the truth. Good question DEVLEC! I'm anxious to hear the other opinions.

That's one of my favorites viper. The PC59-221 is on page 290 in the Charlton variety section.

I'm thinking 1859 9/6 Type 2 is a real tough one to find. I have seen a lot of 9/6 Type 1 cycle through E-Bay the last 2 yrs. In saying that I have only seen one 1859 that is on page 282 of the 2011. This coin I would love to get my hands on and page 286 never seen one, like to own one. Both coins have a wow factor to them.

Strach-Man I do agree that the one on page 282 and 286 38+E39b and 46a+J5a are both quite scarce! Here are both of them! MG

65a+P4a the Saber tooth one! Ah ..Oh..I think that I've started something with that "Sabre-Tooth" label... Here are few tough ones again..3 pics of the 383..and a final pic of the 9 in the 46a3.. Thanks for these great and tough 9's being posted here... There has to be a lot more "other" variety collectors that can add scarce ones here...I would think.. ..added contrast to see more details.. 46a3 . .
