Yes. Looks authentic to me and it is not unusual to find small gold coins made into jewelry like this.

The pin and some of the solder can be removed but it will forever be known as an "ex-jewelry" piece worth it's melt value.

I would leave it as is but have a jeweller check the solder on the hasp and pin and also on the clasp mechanism or hook, to ensure that it is secure, and then wear it to coin shows and on my suit jacket lapel. What a great conversation piece!

I don't care for the way the digits in the date look. They are different sizes. Is this supposed to be an 1836 or an 1838? I am having a hard time telling exactly what it is.

Here is an 1836 with the "script 8" for you to use for a comparison.

I don't have an 1838 Philadelphia Mint coin; it's on my want list. I do have an 1838-C for you to study.
