This quite obvious "thing" is just north of the mint mark, but it doesn't fit any of the D/D listings and honestly, given that odd angle, doesn't even quite look like a D would work for it. Any opinions would be helpful.

That is just die flow. Normal cent. Note the date is showing the same die flow as well on the left sides of the devices. A very worn die. VLDS

first of all...very informative images...i like them a lot.
i do see what COOP is refering to - the VLDS - die flow.

i also see the extra metal north of the mint mark. considering the age of the coin - the chances of a new MM discovery - are probably pretty low. if there is not a listed RPM, the it is likely something else. possibly a die chip - but yours does not look like a typical chip.

i see what you are asking about...but I am not knowledgable enough to explain it.

cool find..

Or a die dent in that area. I don't see enough of it looking like a mint mark punch. (I missed that area on the first look) I just noted the heavy die flow.

A die dent, now that sounds like the most reasonable thing. Thanks for the comments and kind words on my pics.

Looking again today, it not appears to be coin damage. (third image) I just noticed the indent to the SE of the mark. It looks more now to me like moved coin material pushing it NW. Looking at the coin might tell me if that is what is on the coin?
