Haxby or Charlton? Discuss! Is one better than the other? I've always used Charlton's. Thought about trying Haxby.

Both are excellent must have tools.

Doctor Haxby's work includes an abundance of information absent in Charlton's.
Dr. Haxby's work admirably combines decimals and tokens in a logical presentation.
Whereas, with Charlton, at least two separate (and pricy) books need to be purchased
(tokens and decimals).

Concerning tokens, Charlton's identification system has been widely accepted
and is readily known. Charlton's work is necessary in order to identify what
the identification references correspond to. Charlton's has made improvements
to their catalogue over the years. (In the past, I supplied much data concerning
many areas requiring correction.)

I highly recommend obtaining both tools, each being more useful than the other,
dependent upon the quest. Dependent upon the mission, a carpenter may use a tack
hammer, a framing hammer, or a sledge hammer. One tool, or book alone does not
always properly accomplish the task. The proper tool or book makes the work easier
and more accurate.

Charlton owns (or has copyrighted) many of the common terms and ID names/numbers that have been accepted for years (DP#'s 1-5, etc) as well as the most commonly used terms for Obverses. I ahve both and use them both, as Doug has said.

Just wondering of the 2 Haxby books are you referring to the 2016 coins of Canada 34th edition or Guide book of Canadian coins or both?

The Doctor Haxby book I am referring to is the "A Guide Book of
Canadian Coins and Tokens" 1st edition, published by Whitman's.

I've had my Haxby guide for about two years and I gotta say it is really good! About half of the book is dedicated to tokens, the other half to decimals. Lots of info there, including a bit stuff on old counterfeit tokens.

Coins of Canada, now published by Unitrade in Toronto, was mentioned. I wrote the decimal and paper money sections of that catalog for the first three editions (1971-77) when it was owned by Western Publishing Co. (Whitman)in the States. They then sold it to Unitrade and after that neither I nor the late Bob Willey (my co-author) had any connection with it. A few years ago Whitman again decided they wanted a Canadian catalog and asked me to write them a new one. Hence, the 2012 A Guide Book of Canadian Coins and Tokens. JAH

Sorry if my terms are incorrect, but my understanding was that Haxby was a catalogue for Modern and Obsolete Counterfeits. Or is that category just one section/part of a Haxby catalogue?

Thanks.

Doctor Haxby is a most prolific numismatic author, researcher, and historian. Decades ago Dr. Haxby compiled a four volume tome
on US Obsolete Bank Notes which, still today, remains as the industry reference / identification standard. I suspect some may be
confusing the varied subject matters inked by the same master.
