The going price I am getting is $2.38 $4.76 per dollar face for 40% at the local coin store ( changes daily according to silver value). Check coin and scrap dealers in your area. some are better then others.

Well it depends on how much you paid for them. If you got them from pocket change or from roll hunting, then you made a nice profit per item. If you have more to sell, 40% or 90%, PM me as I am always interested in buying.

This particular sale aside, here is a strategy you might want to consider: take your coins to wherever you sell them, and find out what they would pay you for them. Then walk away. Offer them up here in the auction section of the site with a starting bid of what you were offered for them plus actual shipping. That way you really can't lose (unless the price of silver totally tanks--and I mean totally--overnight).

Anything less than coinage silver or sterling is not really seeing full melt value right now due to low demand for it with all the 90% and .925 stuff pouring in. My local dealer is paying $2 per 40% half but he is paying either 13 or 14x face for 90%. He said that the big silver buyers are not that interested due to the availability of higher silver content material and the higher smelting costs associated with the lower percentages. Also, he almost never gets anyone over the counter asking to buy bags of 40% halves or 35% nickels- the vast majority of his silver sales are face value bags of 90%, Silver Eagles, and bars.

They're paying $2.50 here.

As biokemist said, the purer the better and the buy prices are reflecting that. Interestingly enough there are still people paying upwards of 2.00 for them, but not me or any other collector I know, just newbie hoarders.

Really? If a newbie hoarder (or anyone with half a brain) is able to amass a hoard of 2000 of these, he could sell them to APMEX right now for $5470. If you buy at $2 each, that's a profit of $1470. Not the kind of profit I look down my nose at, which is why I would have happily paid $2+ for The Other Bruce's silver halves.
