This is actually quite old. The newer counterfeits are much scarier - apparently CAD software is involved.

Now this is the real worrying stuff: https://www.NGCcoin.com/news/series/7/

Wow--those pictures are horrifying. I know some people have downplayed the potential impact of counterfeiting on coin collecting, but the massive number and quality of counterfeits these days has got to have a destabilizing effect on the coin market. Seeing pictures from that counterfeit operation is really disheartening.

Yes, really old. Been posted here more than a few times.

I think this was the first mention...

Chinese engaging in counterfeiting operations? No one should be surprised. They do this with everything. I used to be in the flooring industry many years ago and the Chinese would make wood and laminate floorings similar to what the major US companies produced.

@joeysanders: Top Gear once had an episode where they looked closer at Chinese cars. Almost all of them were copies of existing models produced in the Western world. Trying to stop them via a court case won't get you anywhere in China.

For coins: sure, we shouldn't be surprised and we shouldn't expect things to improve anytime soon (except the quality of the fakes, that is). That's just now how it works there.

The scary part is this was first reported 8 years ago and they have been churning out the fakes ever since then. Think of how many of these fakes have entered the market in 8 years.
