I paid not much over melt for this coin, hoping I could improve it using silver test solution

1870-Newfoundland-$2

Most of the solder came off but unfortunately the solder had been used to conceal a plug and some filing. Oh well. It's an interesting pocket coin.

This coin is equivalent to $2 US, not $2 Canadian.

The first thing I check on bullion coins is their weight. This one weighs 3.3 grams, exactly double the weight of a US gold dollar. The gold fineness is higher than US standard .900, at .917, so it's actually worth a little more than two US gold dollars.

Though the mintage on these is low, they trade close to bullion in low grades.

This is the first one I've ever seen. Canadian gold $5's and sovereigns usually sell at a premium even in low grades, so it's surprising that the older Newfoundland coins don't.
