Those coins are very cool. Is that the Aztec calendar on the reverse?

It is the Aztec calendar. It's what makes the coin for me.

Not my area of collecting, so I have to ask...what happened between 1921 and 1959? Why were none minted?

I think it was basically the same reason the U.S. stopped minting gold coins for circulation in 1932. The gold content became more valuable than the currency denomination. Mexico did start to produce gold coins again in the 40's but they were for bullion and not circulation. Similarly the 1959 20 peso gold piece could have been minted in the 60's and back-dated. Hopefully someone else will chime in with exactly what happened as this is pretty much a guess.
