I re uploaded the pictures as reference. As mentioned in the 1914 thread, PCGS has now deemed this coin to be counterfeit.

I am stumped, is it the eye that is off?
This looks too good to me.

Quote: I am stumped, is it the eye that is off? Only one obverse was used for the 1891 C2 SDLL and it should have broken lower serifs on the N of REGINA and upper serifs on the D of CANADA Quote: This coin stumped the best in the business. PCGS caught it... and body bagged it. I wonder if they consulted Rob Turner's book, or spoke with Rob himself. Or, if a lurker (folks who read CCF but never post, like Sandy Campbell) alerted PCGS of the coin. See Rob's post (bosox) here: http://goccf.com/t/271671&whichpage=8

As far as I know Rob has not seen or been consulted on the coin by PCGS. I cannot speak for Sandy. The coin was sent to PCGS on an express tier before the counterfeit thread for the 1914 coin was started. However the coin was held at PCGS for an extended period of time which did span the start of the 1914 thread.

Having done some research from Rob's material, this is an 1888 obverse O2Q. It amazes me that this much detail can be counterfeited from another source. Just about every marker (including repaired remnants of die chips) for this obverse has been reproduced in great detail.

For the sake of interest (and some awe factor) SPP put this coin under an XRF with the following results.
94.92% Cu 3.53% Sn 0.71% Zn
Which according to Roger falls within the parameters of a regular Victorian cent. As do the weight diameter and thickness mentioned above.

So..it's not fake.

No, it's a fake. An Obv 2 SDLL should have a broken upper serif on the D in Dei and broken foot on the N in Regina... as I understand it. It's certainly not in his book.

This combination of dies is not in Rob's book. If it was real, it would be an unknown to date combination.

I took some photos under the microscope of this coin, before returning it to the Coin Hunter. The parallel lines on the raised devices are not seen on any mint state Victorian 1-cent coin I have ever seen. Note that die polishing lines, seen in the fields of all Canadian coins, from the Royal, Heaton and RCM, usually run north-south and are always contained to the fields (highest points on the dies). These look like laser etching marks - which makes sense if you are laser-cutting a negative-relief pattern into a die.

Interesting. I noticed these in the previous photos, but just assumed they were slide marks on the ICCS plastic. Since PCGS is essentially clueless on die combinations, I was wondering how they pegged it as counterfeit. Now I know.
