Well, folks, time flies when you're having fun. This December it will be 5 years since Ed and I introduced my on-line 1859 catalog. In recent times Ed has gotten much busier and can't help as much for now, but Randy (Phil310) has come forward to ably assist me and we're about to introduce several changes. Those changes include fixing various typos, listing new dies and die pairs, and adding many new photos, including a full-side photo for each obverse and reverse die. It's our goal to have the catalog completely updated by the anniversary date, which I think is the 24th. There are other things coming, too, but more about that as the time approaches.

I can't imagine how many accumulated years of research has gone it this catalog, it's an amazing contribution to the numismatic community, thank you!. I have started to go through my 1859s and am slowly figuring it out.

The answer is decades. By the late 1960s I was avidly collecting 1859s and I soon established a network of several people saving them for me. VF to AU examples cost me 50c to $1.

For many years there wasn't much interest in the 1859 varieties beyond what was in the standard catalogs, so for most of the time I worked alone on them and many of the other dates. Working alone was often exciting, but it could be very frustrating, too. On several occasions I had to put the 1859s aside for awhile. I even considered selling my 1859s a couple of times, but their fascination was so strong it always drew me back.

In 2010 I began the catalog on paper as installments in Numismatica Canada, but it soon became clear that at the rate of 40 pages every 4 months it would take too long to complete it, perhaps more time than I had left! Then Ed offered his help and proposed the idea of making it an on-line catalog. And the rest is history.

By the way, one of the features in the updated catalog will be a section where those who have made significant contributions are more formally recognized.

I think the timing is perfect Jim, for a CN Journal article on your 1859 N9 catalogue... are you familiar with my variety column, "Canadian Spice"? Send me a PM...

Be sure to thank yourself, too, Marcel. You've been very supportive and helpful right from the start!

Marcel is part of a small, select group of people who have identified at least one new die. Gradually some new dies are turning up, but only after very hard and careful looking. Once in a while things go the other way -- sharp-eyed Randy has found a couple of cases where the same die was in the catalog as two separate dies.

Randy and I will begin activating new die listings and other changes very soon. These changes won't be announced here, which would clutter the forum. Instead, please check the date on the "News" tab on the right end of the menu bar on the site itself. We'll change the date each time a significant change is made. Clicking on the "News" will give you all the details.
