OK, so I can't see any difference in the spacing between the AM of the 1987 and the 1988. My pennies are mostly D's. What exactly am I supposed to be looking for? It'd be nice if there were pictures in the durned book!!

If you are talking about the 1988 Lincoln Cent with the reverse of 1989, you are looking for serifs on the G of the initials to the right of the memorial.

Thanks! So is it good if it does or doesn't have the serif?

The 1988 ones should be the RDV-005. The dies were wearing out and they full some new dies for the 1989 cents early. Thus creating the wrong year variety for the 1988 cents with the RDV-006. So they are the desired ones. The RDV-005 were very worn and the RDV-006 should be fresh dies. So if you have a worn die, it is probably the 005. I have not yet seen a 006 with a worn die on the 1988 cents. (both mints could have the same issue)

I see a double light pattern on the image. Best for close images to be a single light. Sometimes you have an unwanted light and using a facial tissue you can block it with that. But it looks like a RDV-005. Note the top loop of the 'G' is just like the image I posted earlier. It is not doubled, the issue with the light makes look like that. So it is the common one for that year.

Thanks. I thought it was 005. Just doubled. None of the other coins did that, even tho it was the same setup. I'll try the tissue trick when I get back to it.

Note the position on the top loop of the 'G'. It is a RDV-006 which is normal for this year. The center cross bar was polished off the die as the die is aging and being abraided to remove clashes. Looking at the obverse, I wouldn't have spent any time on this one. If it were a valuable die, it would be considered a total loss because of the damage on the obverse. When they look like that (parking lot find), off color, zinc rotted or damaged, I toss them back into circulation without a look. It is pretty much a waste of time when the coin is undesirable in appearance.

I probably would have done that, but that coin was tails-up when I reached it, so I just slid it under the scope. I figured I'd ask about the bar anyway, just in case. Going through the 1990's, I found several more without the horizontal bar.
