hi gang

my apologies if you have seen this before, but I found this webpage on all the grading services (including one not in business any more) to be very interesting... they even to into how reliable their grades are and stuff like that.

verifies what I already knew about NGC... that their grading is not consistent. I submitted a coin which I know is a 68, possibly even a 69, but it came back as a 67. grrrrr.... but I am too afraid to "crack" it open, submit it to another service and possibly get fingerprints on it (are they not supposed to be wearing special gloves or something when handling a coin?). worse yet, what if I submit the coin to another service and it comes back again as a 67 or lower! It was a $300 grading fee, so I am not anxious to repeat that expense unless I got a higher grade. I am not saying that NGC or some of the other services are wrong, but I do think that, depending on the grader(s), that they can be either too conservative or lenient (like a scratched and milk-spotted quarter going as a 70 haha.

In my case, my opinion was that NGC was too conservative, I cannot find any defects on my coin even with a magnifying glass... and I get a 67! another coin like mine sold on HA with a 68 grade. I know pictures can be very deceiving and different, depending on many factors, but this other coin looked like sh*t (in the photos anyways) compared to my coin. (tearing what little hair I have left out).

I would be interested in your opinions on what their opinions are... that you find their findings accurate or not, etc.

if nothing else it is a fun read and seems to be pretty complete. ok, here 'dey are...

Very old and outdated information. That's not even 1% of the services that have come and gone.

PCI has gone through three (maybe five) ownerships since that was published.
ANACS was sold to Anderson Press, then to Driving Force LLC (and now to EKL LLC).
SEGS still has the same name but is a different organization since those days.

well, shut my mouth! it is good to have the more experienced members here... outdated or whatever, is it accurate still?

heck, I am outdated myself, but it does not mean I am the same person I always was...

if you have a site or source for the "updated" information, explaining the changes, please provide it so that the rest of us newbys can benefit from your expertise!

It may be old and outdated, but I find it interesting that many of the same complaints still exist for some of those companies.

The more things change......

A lot of the information is incorrect. Some (not all) comments...

PCGS phone support is good, but their record with emails is reported to be abysmal.

ICG no longer has the intercept holders.

Grading is rarely described as accurate nor consistent.

They do provide more attributions than others and they have the 'educational' slab for counterfeit coins (they are the only one to slab them).

Both NGC and PCGS do (partly) grade problem coins - XF Details with a code or description of the problem (harshly cleaned).

NGC

Grading is far more consistent than ICGs. Although none of the TPGs are perfect (people will argue with any of them)!

ANACS

Holders are completely different. Since the time shown there have been several different owners, roughly the blue label (Anderson Press) and the Yellow (Driving Force LLC).

Quality of grading is subject to disagreements.

They are inexpensive and attribute more than NGC/PCGS so people use them for protection.

SEGS

Some people do like the edge label on the holder.

The company has been reorganized since this page was written and does not stand behind older coins.

PCI

Still uses the same holder, that's about the only thing true.

The three code green label slabs shown are thought of as reasonably accurately graded, especially with today's gradeflation. But that's about it. Past that...

After the green labels they went through several ownerships getting worse each time. Bankrupt and the assets were purchased by David Lawrence Rare Coins and relaunched as DGS (Dominion Grading Service) then closed shortly.

The assets were bought by Anthony Dellauniversita in the 2010-2011 timeframe. They reused the green label shown in the picture (however, the microprinted PCI of the reverse border on the good ones is a line of blobs on the bad ones). They fraudulently overgraded coins for their closely affiliated company to sell.

http://www.coinweek.com/pdf/Finding...of%20Law.pdf

Since then, they have again relaunched but nobody really knows who is running the show - it's a PO Box on Long Island. They've graded around 11K coins since end of 2011/early 2012... the newest labels (still in the same Hallmark slab) have what looks like tracks and a bullet train as the border.

NTC ... less said the best.
