I dont what happened to me on buying 5 boxs of halfs this time. I always found silver coins in there or nice proof coins or lots of cool coins. This is worst 5 boxs I ever seen from ever . I never had this happen to me after buying over 20 boxs of them in past.

1. One 1967 silver coin totol after 5000 coins went thru .
2. Tons coins where they marked with red lines, or black mark on ears they ruined marking them. Just like dallas texas coins.
3. 1990, 1979 proof coins found so bad they need to be tossed back.

1. 1 box was fed box dated on feb 16, 2008 . 4 boxs had brinks all over them.

Its looks silver has lefht the system in houston texas just like dallas texas you guys are talking about. There have must been lots guys in houston searching halfs becides me. It an mess and seems all cool coins are gone. It was waste of time on those.

I dont know if should give up yet after going 24 boxs in last year or maybe try another bank and try ordor more and start over again and try to forget about this mess of halfs.

It was my worst ever seen.

I just went through 2 boxes last night. They were "Brinks" rolls. Didn't find anything, no proofs, mint set onlys, or "hard to find". They too had red and black marks on many of the nicer coins that I would have considered mint state. To the free coin toss I go to get my $1k back! Think I need to find a new source...maybe venturing into hillbilly land, Eastern KY!

Hey there-

Yesterday I pulled over 120 90%s out of $100 in halves I bought. I live between NY and Boston but we have some 'out there' towns.

This batch of halves I picked up must have come from some kid cashing in his grandfather's old coins.

However I was turned down when I went back to buy the place out. The manager got smart to the amount of silver in the rolls.

Too bad.. but keep searching.. they are out there.. just stay away from bigger banks in bigger cities
good luck!

I hear you. Same problem in metro Atlanta..... I think the deal is that so many are screening boxes of halves that it has become a lost cause. I just finished a spell of checking thirty-four (34) three- four boxes of half dollars with pretty much zip as the result. What I found was One Mexican ten peso coin from 1978; one 2003s Kennedy that had been in circulation for a bit, and a BU 2006P Kennedy half. No silver of any description.

Many of the coins had been marked with magic marker - a sure sign of prior screening.

All I have are sore fingers and displeased tellers at my bank not looking forward to my weekly visits. I bet its the same most everywhere. What's the better way? Is it still possible to obtain coin bags or boxes straight from the Fed?

I went through a box of $500 last week and was also skunked. Many of the coins were marked with a sharpie. today I was able to get another box. This one had 2 40% coins. Both dated 1967. Most of the coins in the box were also marked with sharpie.

My brother in law owns an auto body shop and I took a shot in the dark and asked if he had any rolls of half dollars laying around.

his response? 'yeah we have some old rolls from years ago'

14 rolls later... 3 40s .. no 90s

even old rolls are cleaned out!

Texas is known as one of the toughest, if not the toughest area, to do "half dollar" hunting because of the plethora of coin searchers. I've been told by one hunter that he doesn't even live in Texas, but he lives in a state that is close enough that the "Texas drought" has affected him there.

Yeah, I live in central Texas and I'm not having much luck lately at all with the halves...I wish I had Coppernickeldaddy's luck.
