I have been looking at some of my quarters recently and noticed this one...and the mint mark looks suspicious to me.

The first picture is a legit one from PCGS pictures

The rest are my quarter.

I guess I am not experienced enough to know if the mintmark looks altered. The excess gunk right there compared to the rest of the coin caught my eye.

In the Dansco it looks more normal, so I took it out.

Thanks for any advice.

Mint marks are punched by hand during this time, so that is why there is a variation of position. I think it is fine. As for gunk it could be carbon spots or if it is gunk a dip in acetone would remove it.

Thank you for the reply and information, much appreciated.

Hopefully that explains my 37-S (below). It looks even more suspect to me.

Badly cleaned-- definitely (not by me). Fake-- hopefully not.

Going through the rest, I think they all look fine other than these 2.

I am not an expert, but it looks okay to me. Gunk tends to catch on the mint marks and tight areas the most. It tends to get left behind when the coin is cleaned.
Rest in Peace

I can understand your concern on the 35-D since it appears that the only area where any carbon/crud is located on the entire coin is on the D. I can't tell from this "big" photo.

Any way you can zoom in to the mint mark only?

They both look fine to me. Agree a bit of acetone and a Q-tip wouldn't hurt.
Rest in Peace

Normal looking circulated Washington quarters.

As mentioned, mint marks were hand punched.
