Copperround - I think most of us were sleeping when your post came it. I still like finding Grease Filled Dies - even just missing 1 device is different - This was especially true when I was first starting out in the hobby.

Is anyone aware of a good article describing the circumstances leading to " Grease Filled Die" strikes?

Thank you for the welcome. 2 x 2 worthy?! Yes! I need to do that! Lol. The only supplies I have so far are the coins They're covering just about every surface I have. I can't believe how long I've gone in life without realizing the simple beauty of a coin. They really are are gorgeous. Yes I am in Michigan John1. Oh, and I finally got to see and hold my first S minted penny-a wheat. I've been bitten bad by the coin search/collecting bug. It's a me , my coins, and a magnifying glass (and a bottle of eye drops) Not wine lol

Quote:Is anyone aware of a good article describing the circumstances leading to " Grease Filled Die" strikes? It is not really something worthy of a research article. The US Mint is more or less the same as any other industrial manufacturing facility. Coin presses are big machines that need oil and grease to function properly, sometimes those lubricants get on the die and obscure fine details.

The above shows a weak "I" and "B" in Liberty. Nothing on the reverse is remarkable.sorry for the glare.

It's a 1991. I agree that it is a Grease Filled Die. Nice find, but to be honest it probably isn't worth much over a penny. Worth keeping in my book since you're so excited by it! I used to get excited over these things too!
