Hey,

This is my fist post so hello all. I came across this quarter while searching new rolls. It has edge damage and is missing about three quarters of the reeds. Also, on the obverse there is what seems to be a die crack running from the last S in STATES right down Washington's forehead, it didn't come out well in the pics.
My questions are is this a die crack and is there a term for the type of edge damage?

Thanks,

Tom

The coin looks like a partial collar strike ,, the damage (scrape) will hurt the value a little but looks like around a 10 to 12 dollar coin to me ,, My estimate maybe off a little I have not looked at the prices for awhile ,so let a few others give opinions before attributing it .

Welcome to the forum !

I agree with Metalman...and the die crack is of no consequence. They are very common and are not collected as errors. Welcome!

Thank you very much for the replies and great info. Could anyone elaborate as to what caused the grind marks.

its difficult to say for sure ,,but more than likely a rolling or counting machine is the cause of the scrapes.

It is a partial collar strike with a bit of damage, probably from a counting machine. The collar, also known as the third die, is what defines the diameter of a coin and gives it reeding. When a coin is struck out of collar, the diameter is larger than a normal coin. Since the collar was partially in place(only some of the reeding was formed) it did not expand as much as if the collar had not been engaged at all- that is known as a broadstruck coin.

I would think it's pretty valuable...not sure how much, but it's a keeper.
