Hi, Guys,

I saw this 1/10 gold coin on ebay going for $154 and change. That's a bit over spot, but the mintage is 10,000. Is that a good buy?

Also, where do you reliably find mintages on Canadian gold coins? Sometimes the Canadian mint page gives a number, other times not.

Thanks!

Hi!

First of all, when buying gold over ebay, make sure that you triple check that the seller is legit and can be trusted. Double checking isn't good enough. There are too many weirdo's out there.

Second: a mintage number doesn't say much about the numismatic value. I have a few coins with a mintage in that range and they went for 25 cent in the junk bin. Not gold coins, of course, but you get what I try to say, I hope. Precious metal at just a bit over spot is always a good deal, although gold is relatively very expensive now: if you are buying because you like the coin: it's great. If you buy it as an investment in gold: you may wait until the market cools down a bit (that's what I'm doing, at least, but I might of course be proven wrong in the future).

Third: A source I use for mintage numbers is the website of numista.com. They usually only update numbers when a reliable source is given. They don't have a perfect data set either, but they might have something to add to your known data.

I hope this helps!

Thanks. It appears this seller has over 59k sales, and a 99.8% thumbs up rating. The reviews on the coin appear to be good as well. Anyplace else I should be looking?
