Another of Grandpa's buys. The holder is marked "WS" which I assume means weak strike? I've compared it to some from 1950, and the lettering isn't as bold. Otherwise I'm not seeing a huge difference. Care to tell me what I should be seeing? Thanks!

I see no evidence of a weak strike. The rims are full the deeper devices are all there. So I'm not sure what was meant by the 'WS'. The designer initials were 'FS' but we not added until 1966. It is a great coin. Nothing to be ashamed with. Possible high grade coin.

Ah. I even checked the steps, compared to the 1950D's. No real diff.

And yeah, if I had any other 1938D's, I'd have done that.

They were common, thus the different dies reverse of 1940 and the reverse of 1938 on the 1939 coins.

All the 1938s were the weak reverse. The 1939 had the two different reverses. (1938 and 1940 reverses)
Rest in Peace

You can't compare 1938 to 1950 because after 1939 the Jefferson nickels reverse was redesigned. Specifically the steps. So nickels made after 1939 have better struck steps.

WS may possibly be referring to weak steps as pre 1940 nickels were prone to having "weakly struck" or "weak steps"
