Went to a local coin show today to try and add a few MS Mercury dimes to my collection. Only two of about twenty dealers had MS Mercs available. A couple of dealers stated they left their better Mercs "back home". Has anyone else seen this trend before? I was able to add one MS coin to the stable. On another note, there were plenty of circulated Mercs available at good prices, so I decided to start a second collection of circulated Mercs (see Recent Purchases thread).

Still better than the last one I tried going to. I pulled up only to find the parking lot empty. I asked a maintenance man that was walking around about the show, and he said it was cancelled! Glad it was less than a 10 min drive, but a little notice would have been nice.

Quote: happens all the time, a dealer can't bring everything they own Hadn't thought about it that way. I guess if they don't see the interest they don't bring the product.

Maybe it's just my experiences, but I find "uncirculated" mercs are cleaned most of the time. Really drives me crazy when buying on ebay because sometimes it's hard to tell from pics. I can see why you'd want to hand pick your merc s in person to ensure they are original.

It's king of a double edge sword. A lot of the dealers at the local shows know me, so they now bring things they know I like. It makes it a fairly costly adventure every show.

That has happened to me many times in the past
Dealers at shows telling me they left the coins I am looking for back at the shop.
They say they bring what they think will sell

This is why I prefer shopping for certain coins on ebay. The type of coin I want can be searched for quickly and I did not waste time or gas on a fruitless search.

I once looked at a dealers coins and noticed a coin I needed that was in my price range. I asked him to hold on to the coin until next time (I didn't have the money then). "Next time" came and he says he lost the coin and is looking for it... that was 2 months ago...
