U S Mint Conflict Of Interest
2016, November 17
I just Noticed that The U.S. Mint has 2 Events Scheduled on November 17,2016. I live in North Carolina and was planning on attending the Release Of the Fort Moultrie ( Fort Sumpter Nationsl Monument ) Quarter at Sullivan Island, South Carolina on the above Date at 10:30 A.M. ( ET ) That is about a 5 hours drive for me. I also want to be on-line at Noon for the Release of the Walking Liberty 2016 Centennial Gold Coin at 12:00 Noon. Unfortunately I do not have a Smart Phone ,so I do not have Internet Access.

There will be plenty of the 2016 WL Gold Coins available and will unlikely sell out on the first day (or during the first month).
A quarter launch only occurs for a few hours, is over pretty quick and there is no replay of the ceremony.
I think I'd go to the launch ceremony and then come home and buy the WL gold coin. If You miss out due to an unlikely sellout then you can always buy one on the secondary market.

Go to the quarter launch. Find a public library as close as possible to the location of the quarter launch. they should have a public access computer for the public to use there to place you order for the gold Walker. http://ccpl.org/content.asp?id=1463...arentID=5374Address: PO Box 798 1921 I'On Avenue Sullivan's Island, SC 29482 Phone: (843) 883-3914 Fax: (843) 883-9548 Branch Manager: Delores Schweitzer Hours of operation: Monday and Friday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday and Saturday: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday: 2 p.m.-8 p.m. Wi-Fi available? I would strongly suggest NOT using public WiFi to enter your credit card or US Mint account details...

I would think that since the quarter is still available as we speak the chances of the half dollar selling out in a few hours is slim to none. The only reason the dime sold out so quickly was the household limit was 10 and the dealers were offering extra dollars to those that would buy extras. And flippers were purchasing multiples. 100,000 of these will last for a while just like the quarters have / are.

Do you think that if I sign into a W I F I place and then proceed to the U. S. Mint.gov site. Login and then submit my order I should be Safe. The Mint Site should be a Secured Web Site when I place an order

Quote: I would strongly suggest NOT using public WiFi to enter your credit card or US Mint account details... He already said he DOES NOT have a smarty phone. And I can see where paying $300 more on the secondary market is a better plan the calling your CC company as soon as your card is charged by the mint and asking for a new account number if you are that paranoid. And yes, Sullivan island is number 4 behind Compton CA, Detroit MI, and Chiraqu in terms of lucky to walk out alive or with a dollar in your pocket at the end of the day. You're more likely to get your credit card number stolen at a pay at the pump gas station than the public library.

I would also think you can still phone in orders to customer service. From a regular cell phone. Or landline if there are one of those around.

Always be careful, but it's far more likely that your cardholder data would be stolen through a database breach than being snagged by someone listening to your wireless data. If you're using an encrypted/SSL connection (which the U.S. Mint site uses), you should be fine. To verify if your transaction is secure, look for "https://" in the URL and a lock icon or something like the following: This is from FireFox but it should be similar for all browsers.

More worried about a Keylogger at the library - usually there is no physical security.

If history is any indicator, you are a greater risk paying at the pump or shopping a large retail chain. Just remember to clear the cache before you leave. Better yet, use incognito (Chrome) or private (Firefox) window browsing for the transaction. Quote: More worried about a Keylogger at the library - usually there is no physical security. A valid concern. While I am still more worried about back-end breaches, it might be wise to use a virtual card number and change your password when you get home. Regardless, I think this is moot. This will not sellout, so just wait to order from home.

you could always buy a prepaid card and use it for this purchase only.

If your card is already on file with the mint and you aren't entering it would a Wi-Fi intercept be able to get the number?

Quote: If your card is already on file with the mint and you aren't entering it would a Wi-Fi intercept be able to get the number? They should not be able to since it is obfuscated in the browser. Gaining access to your Mint account (and the other personal information within) is more likely.
