I was in on the bidding for this 1909 D Barber quarter. I didn't win and the coin sold for $104.

It looks like a nice coin, but from the seller's photos I'm not sure if it's an AU or grades better than that. Also not sure if it's original or has been cleaned.

From the photos what is the evidence that it's been cleaned?

The marks on the face or the dirt by the arrows?

I'm still learning to detect cleaned coins.

Thanks.

Ugly, overdipped XF/AU details. Not AU55-AU58 sharpness IMO, too much wear. Note complete absence of luster and wear to wing tips, eagle's head, talons, arrow shaft ends, shield lines, forelocks and lower hair indicating definite circulation.

The different colored areas behind the cap on the obverse, the streaks, and the areas around the stars on the reverse are where toning used to exist before the dip ate it, along with several other areas around the coin.

Be glad you didn't win -- at $104, someone overpaid by about $80-$90.

These are scans rather than photos, so very hard to tell the surface quality. Scans always make coins look cleaned.
I think this is an AU-55 and not cleaned.

AU-50/53. Dipped, but there is still some luster. The pictures are overexposed to bring out the white color, and they wash out almost all luster this coin has. I would not have bid on it.

I disagree with almost everything you said. Definitely AU sharpness, plenty of luster left in the protected areas, and worth considerably more than the maximum $24 you quote. The only point of agreement is that this coin was dipped. If you have more of these for $24 each, I will buy EVERY one you have.

I agree with all of the above. It is a way overdipped coin even possibly cleaned. It gets a huge from me

Can't disagree. AU-50 sharpness at best, if that.

TypeCoin, it's just my opinion, not the gospel truth. I'm just a collector, not a professional coin grader. :) I personally wouldn't pay more than $20-$30 for this coin, simply because I do not find it attractive. Depending on how it looks in hand, you or I might pay quite a bit more -- photos are not a great way to value a coin. I'm just not a big fan of the "grey/white/no luster" look on Barber coins in particular; give me natural black/brown/any color toning just to show me that it had a "life" and I'd take that any day over this lifeless-appearing, dull grey dipped appearance. It's just a matter of personal preference.

I said "not AU55-AU58" sharpness. I would grade this coin XF45-AU50 sharpness, with the reverse being a grade step higher than the obverse. The wear is harder to pick up on because of the complete lack of contrast between the devices, legends, and fields, but it is definitely there, and the strike is average at best. AU55-AU58 Barbers have clearly defined lines/separation for both the forelocks of hair and the lowest hair of the bun, and that simply is not present here in these photos.

Same coin:

I think I made my nice coin below (albeit a slightly higher grade) lose all of its luster and originality by playing with the brightness.

I'm not saying you're wrong; I'm just saying that photos can be hard to judge.

I definitely agree. That's another reason I tend to both grade and bid conservatively on raw coins on ebay -- photos can be both a blessing or a curse.

My bad. Hey, I was wrong. OK, so a neck scrape, but overall this is a beautiful coin.

Let me rephrase. The OP coin is different from my coin. The two sets of pictures are of the same coin. Sorry for the confusion!
