Hi guys, I'm just starting to get into coin collecting and learning about error coins, and am wondering if this is a " Wide AM" variety error.. though the "G" in the initials seem normal.. Do I just have a regular 88-P penny? (I don't have another to compare it to, lol)  Edited by Copperwolf

Okay, that's fine. The "AM" distance looks identical to the "wide" variety pictures I've seen, so it's just the "G" that matters for 1988s, right?

Ok, thank you!
I'm now searching for double-dies in my pennies.. it's like a see slight d-ds on almost every coin, lol.

Sorry guys, another question..
Is this a "RDV-005"? If so, were all other "regular" 88-P pennies the same variety?

The RDV-005 is the normal one for that year. The RDV-006 was the one they pulled early as it was to start being used in 1989. The reason they started early on the 1988? Because the reverse dies were wearing out and needed retiring. They started early. This created a year variety for 1988 both plain (Philly) and Denver reverses. So it you find a worn example for 1988, it is the RDV-005. I have yet to see a RDV-006 for 1988 that was in later die states. Here is another way to tell the differences. By the top of the 'G':  Note the vertical line on the images on the right on the 'G'? That is one way you can see it quicker if it is a 005 or 006. Another way is the location of the 'FG'. The RDV-006 is closer to the building. Hope this helps. |

I was just wondering if some 88s had non-wide "AM"s.

The close 'AM' did start till 1993. So that would be impossible.

to the CCF. If your coin were dated 1998, 1999 or 2000 then you would indeed have a winner. This is the expected and normal reverse for an 1988 LMC.
