Hi all

I'm just starting to dip my toes into the world of coins again after a long absence (having not really partaken since I was a child). Lots to learn, and lots and lots of fun to be had.

Anyway, as part of a combined purchase the other day I picked up a Maria Theresia Thaler from ebay. I'm more than happy with the other coins that came with the purchase, but there are some green marks on the MTT that I was a little worried about and thought I would check up on. It comes in at 28 grams on my kitchen scales (yes, I will replace those soon with something that goes to 2 decimal places!) and it's non magnetic. Scans below (hope they are ok!):

If it is the real deal, any idea on which Hafner it is would be appreciated. I have trawled through http://www.theresia.name, but I think I need a little more exposure to these coins to start getting a real feel for them

The green might be PVC. If left on the coinlong term would damage the coin.

A soak in acetone ..if it is PVC .. will help remove the green ..

Hi both,

Thanks for the answers! I got some acetone today, and had my first experience using it with a coin. A dip and roll with a cotton bud achieved nothing, but a 15 minute soak for the coin had lifted all of the green from the lettering and other places. Of course, it's unfortunate to be left with the light marks (I guess the 'damage') from the PVC, but great to know I've nipped that infection in the bud and stopped it further damaging the coin. Also a good sign that it didn't melt or do anything unexpected there, so I'll clock this one in as a genuine I think.
