Any coin over $500 I like to think about and plan. Today the chance to buy this coin came up, and for some reason made the deal. I do have a 1885 CC GSA, but was thinking I would pick up a raw one for my Dansco album. Has this happened to you .. you see a better date coin and say yes .. I will buy that. Any opinions on the coin are welcome.

Nice coin, MS63ish? Yes, I know the feeling and I can always justify it by saying "I can just sell the duplicate later"...and then we end up keeping it. Funny things our minds do when we have a "want".

Looks nice - can you throw a little more light on the surfaces and tell us about the luster?

Very nice coin. I'm not too familiar with the market for 1885 CC Morgans, so I can't say if you got a good deal or not. Looks on the verge of MS-63/64. Has this happened to me? Yes. One of the best $235 I have ever spent: Although technically not impulse (I had to gather up the money and get Bill Fivaz's opinion on the toning), but I fell in love with it and decided to buy it as soon as I saw it.

What a beautiful coin. Just a love affair, money aside. (Talking about the Bust half, of course!)

I'm thinking AU-55 or -58. Rim ding at about 11 on the reverse doesn't help.
At first I was also thinking "dipped" but not now. Dipping would probably have eliminated the apparent rub marks.

I'm thinking MS-62, only because of the subdued luster. I'm not convinced I see any wear. Very nice Morgan!

Lovely coin indeed ...
I make many 'planned' impulse buys at shows when the unexpected example shows up.
I'm thinking this Morgan is AU in grade ... unable to judge the surfaces based on the photos provided.

There's a fair amount of bag rub so I'll say MS61 maybe 62 on a good day. Nice impulse buy GR!

I hope you can post images with different lighting angles. I'm enjoying the discussion on the grade--very educational!

I try, not always successfully, to force myself to walk away and go have coffee just to cool off because I've learned the hard way that I have to curb my impulses. I didn't do such a great job of that after deciding to allocate a portion of my savings to getting a few starter coins, and I'm sure I made some unwise buys. Fortunately, my budget is such that a $500+ impulse buy isn't happening. LOL.
You don't say what you DID pay for this, but based on the fact that PCGS suggests $600 for a grade 4, this looks like a great pick!

Ok GR, she's a solid 63. Slight weak strike, some bag rub. Going rate slabbed even in NGC 63 is around $650-700. If you paid under $600 you did well, if you paid around $500 you did GReat!
