Ok, Ive been trying to figure this one out for a little while now, but I'm far from being an expert still so I wanted to see what you guys all think. Ive had this coin since I found it in pocket change almost 30 years ago (I was just a kid) and just recently found it going through some of my old stuff. Anyways, from what I can gather, and my limited knowledge of errors up till now, I was thinking either its some kind of planchet defect that was there before the strike, OR..... a strike through of some kind where the object kinda got squeezed out (or somewhere) and thats the trail it left? Am I even on the right track? I tried to get the best close ups as I could with what I have right now, which isn't much, but you can see the faint part of the bottom of the "E" actually in the part of the coin where the error took place. Well, at least I think it looks to be the bottom part of the E, but then again it could just be shadows playing tricks as they always seem to do when trying to look at anything as small as this.
Also note, there is a faint strike through present on the obv, take note of the area right behind Jefferson's head, its faint, but I verified it to line up correctly, but I'm sure theres no relation between the two in this case, just wanted to point that out as well. Thanks!
Here is an overlay to see how the obverse was affected: There must have been a bit of polishing on the fields on the obverse that removed part of the fields in that area.
