This 2003 P nickel has thicker letters on the obverse that I think may be caused by Die Deterioration but since I am new at this I would love some expert help. I have put this penny on top of another 2003 penny for comparison. On the obverse and reverse the letters and numbers appear thicker and seem somewhat "doubled". To me it looks like a split in the serif on the D in GOD. The R in LIBERTY curls up on the front leg and seems to have a trail extending up between the R and T. On the reverse the area to the left of the dome extends higher than it should and is an odd shape. What are your thoughts?

to the forum!

You are comparing a Denver mint coin with a Philadelphia mint coin. When comparing coins, always use the same date and mint.

I think the obverse is just showing some circulation wear.

I seldom get Philadelphia coins so I had to compare it to a Denver coin. Is there that much difference between mintages?
Do you think the Die Deterioration accounts for that area near the dome?
I'm learning so much from the members on this site. Thank you for your input.

I feel it is Die Deterioration on both sides of the coin. The dies widen out a bit as they age making the device appear enlarged, but when you look closely, you can see that it is from a worn die because the devices are uneven in appearance. But both mints were hubbed from the same master dies. So they should be the same except for the mint mark as part of there design.
