I came across this in an old collection of Wheat cent errors. Wondering if anyone has seen this before and could help with an explanation. There is a wide concave depression across the entire obverse diagonally but there seems to be no effect to the reverse.

PMD Something gouged it. Maybe someone got it with the edge of a grinding disk.

PSD. Note how the trenches edges are higher than the fields? A real clue that someone altered this one.

Thanks for the quick replies. I did notice the higher ridge at the edge of the gouge, especially below "Liberty" and figured that would not occur in the stamping process. I guess it's just so worn since the damage that it looks more like it was stamped in instead of cut.

No I feel it was scraped across the coin with something that was fixed in place. Leaving a furrow on the coin. If it were hammer, then the reverse would have bulged outwards. I don't see evidence of that on the reverse. It is a cull coin now.
